Valley Internet connects your home to a relay a few miles away utilizing low-powered wireless radios. Major relays utilize licensed wireless links to our local fiber-optic back-haul locations. This gives you the lowest and most consistent latency along with high speeds (especially upload) to support your most demanding needs. This translates to high-quality and uninterrupted video calls, ultra-HD streaming, and service reliability and resiliency supported by a local team that is passionate about providing you with the best service at affordable prices.
Starlink uses high-powered transceivers that connect to satellites in low-earth-orbit. The signal then relays to other satellites until eventually it reaches a ground-station with fiber-optic infrastructure. The technology is cutting edge and impressive, however, it is not immune from the laws of physics. The sheer distance the signal needs to travel will always introduce higher latency and inconsistency, which is most notable during video calls and gaming.
In 2022, Starlink had a hard data cap. They have since changed the language to refer to "priority", which in essence is the same as a cap.
Valley Internet is proud to offer top priority speeds, no matter how much data you utilize throughout the month, making Valley Internet service truly unlimited.
Latency describes the "travel time" between your home and the internet, measured in milliseconds. When data packets need to travel more than 40 to 50 milliseconds, they become detrimental to video conferencing, VoIP (phone), and gaming.
HughesNet and Viasat satellites orbit the earth at roughly 22,000 miles away, while Starlink satellites are only about 350 miles from the ground. This distance translates to lower latency on the Starlink service versus the traditional satellite providers.
Valley Internet customers connect to towers that are less than 10 miles away. This minimizes the latency and also environmental variables that might affect the signal.
Average latency and packet loss comparison:
Valley Internet service plan speeds reach 200 Mbps with custom solutions reaching 1Gbps. We are also proud to offer industry-leading upload speeds in relation to download. Making your most important online functions faster and more reliable. Valley Internet is committed to delivering the speeds that you pay for.
Starlink speeds are no longer published alongside their service plans (as of Summer 2024). Instead, they show a range of speeds on the availability map, reaching up to 187 Mbps.
Many factors impact service reliability. From power outages to natural disasters, no service is immune from interruption. Through smart design, infrastructure investment, professional installation, and fast local support, Valley Internet maximizes service reliability and act fast as soon as disaster strikes.
Valley Internet's main advantages versus satellite (and hardline) are:
- Distance: We only connect a few miles versus thousands, reducing the exposure to environmental variables that could degrade service.
- Off-grid infrastructure: Relays utilize robust solar, battery, generator power backup systems in order to stay online when grid power gets cut, or disaster destroys wires.
- Redundancy: Multiple paths to the internet are built into Valley's network design. If disaster does strike, chances are that you will stay online through a fail-over path.
- Local team: Our team is passionate about building and supporting the best internet service provider. We are local and ready to respond when needed most.
Estimated impact of adverse events on different types of internet service:
It doesn't matter who your primary internet service provider is, we recommend everyone has a secondary connection so you can always stay online. The Standby service plan is designed to be your secondary internet connection, ready at a moment's notice and resilient to accidents or disasters.
